i was 24 before i ever really stepped into a gym.

i first started training as part of a wilderness skills residency program in bozeman, montana. we talked about how ones conditioning determined  their reality. about how fitness had broader implications, how it could change the way we thought and how we saw the world. we talked like this, and then went to golds and repped out 3 sets of 8. chest and bi’s, back and tri’s… leg day. this went on for a couple months, my body began to change but i never saw the disconnect. never saw how full of shit i was until i was shown a 2 minute clip of Mark Twight training the cast of the 300. the words were similar, albeit better thought out, but the action was totally different. at that moment i realized i had a choice – i could shut up and keep doing what i was doing, or if i believed what i was saying – i could learn, i could work, and i could change.

the internet makes it easy. i studied. i worked in the gym every day. i made mistakes and asked smarter people for help. i made it to Salt Lake city and was able to attend a seminar at GYM JONES. i brought back answers, but more importantly tools, and more questions. i continued to work, to train myself and eventually others. i returned to Salt Lake and began the process of  becoming a fully certified instructor. i hustled and schemed, i found  a home for my project – a place to test and to grow, to design and build, to welcome those who are willing, and to become something more.
